Gain skills in using regular monitoring and evaluation processes, which will lead to continuous improvements.

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Plan a monitoring and evaluation project
  • Develop evaluation questions that address stakeholders needs
  • Select the most appropriate data collection method for a given situation
  • Effectively communicate monitoring and evaluation data
  • Use the monitoring information for effective feedback and improvement

Testimonials from Past Course Participants for Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation:

“I wanted to tell you “in person” how much I enjoyed the course. I appreciated the opportunity that you and the class afforded to 1) make me think more deeply about some of the assumptions I hold about how social change takes place 2) become a lot smarter about what community-led development should really be in practice, 3) dramatically expand my knowledge of Participatory Monitoring & Evaluation methods and how best to implement them 4) create a “safe space” where I could speak freely.”

“This is the third course I’ve taken through Village Earth, and while they’ve all been eye-opening and valuable, this one brings everything together for me. I see now that for years I wanted participatory M&E in my work, but had no idea it existed, what to call it, what to look for, how to begin to go about it, etc. And I certainly didn’t have the vocabulary to describe vague wish-things-were-different feelings to co-workers or employers. What I’ve learned here, I’ll take and begin to introduce in my community. I’m excited by the way participatory M&E creates the conversation and direction.”

“Local governments are often the first to collapse when factions fight for territorial control. In post-conflict settings, the state is often unable to effectively reach parts of its territory for years. Given these challenges, it is no surprise that decentralization and local governance provisions are increasingly prominent in peace agreements and national post-conflict peacebuilding agendas.” (UN SSC)

The role of local and national NGOs, the transparency and legitimacy of the leaders, as well as the representation and participation of the citizens are increasingly important in these processes.

The course will explore essential topics such as

  • the legitimacy of the government
  • the capacity available for the government
  • eventual sharing of the power (e.g. government and rebels)
  • fragility of the government.

Kenya: Hygiene & Sanitation Promotion Training using PHAST, CLTS and CHAST approaches

Country: Kenya
Organization: IDEAL Public Health and Development Consultancy
Registration deadline: 29 Aug 2018
Starting date: 03 Sep 2018
Ending date: 14 Sep 2018

Hygiene & Sanitation promotion plays a key role in changing collective and individual behaviours together with fostering ownership and sustainable use of water and sanitation facilities. It is upon this premise that IDEAL Public Health and Development Consultancy (IPHDC) has planned to conduct a PHAST, CLTS and CHAST training of trainers. This training is intended to help sector practitioners to accelerate their progress towards achieving the newly adapted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially Goal 6.

Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) is a systematic participatory approach consisting of seven sequential steps that culminate in the development of an action plan for addressing the prevailing WASH problems in a given community. It employs Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and SARAR tools to elicit meaningful and equitable participation of all community members.

Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) is another hygiene promotion approach that triggers the community into action by conjuring disgust and shame among the members who practice open defecation (OD). Its ultimate objective is to achieve total sanitation marked by zero cases of open defecation or open defecation free (ODF) status. It primarily focuses on change at the community level and not at the individual household level. Furthermore, it uses a non-subsidy approach in which the target community are triggered and left to decide the actions they will take to address their sanitation problems.

Children's Hygiene and Sanitation Training (CHAST) is an interactive approach for training children on hygiene and sanitation aspects. Its major objective is to infuse critical hygiene practises that children may adopt into their daily lives. By targeting children, the approach envisions not only the immediate changes in behaviours but also long term changes to be passed on to the posterity. This approach is based on the PHAST approach and uses similar facilitation tools though simplified to enable young children to appreciate the messages.

By the end of the training, trainees will be able to understand which approach or combination thereof that may be most appropriate for their unique contexts.

Who should attend this training?

Programme staff of humanitarian and development agencies including project managers, officers, assistants, health workers, hygiene promoters, public health officers and facilitators.

What are the key aspects of the training?

  • The gradual process of hygiene and sanitation behaviour change and the key factors that influence it.

What are the main training objectives?

The following objectives are planned to be achieved by the end of the training:

  • To build the capacity of trainees to impart knowledge to their community on prevention of diarrhoeal diseases and other water related diseases.
  • To equip trainees with practical facilitation skills of PHAST, CHAST and CLTS approaches.
  • To enable trainees formulate appropriate health promotion messages using the BCC strategy.
  • To provide trainees with planning, monitoring and evaluation formats for PHAST, CHAST and CLTS approaches.
