Globally, school children are exposed to a myriad public health risks and hazards. The situation is worse especially in developing countries and worse still in countries faced with recurrent or protracted humanitarian crises. With the newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the global development community have renewed their commitment to sustain efforts towards providing quality education that is inclusive as articulated under SDG 4 (Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning) and the concomitant targets.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) is a critical component in promoting a conducive learning environment in school hence impacting significantly the quality of education. A number of studies have shown that schools with safe drinking water supply, improved sanitation amenities and appropriate hygiene promotion programs have higher enrollment and retention rates. There is no doubt that disasters in the recent past have become a major global concern and challenge. Increasing disasters are attributed to a number of factors, mainly of human origin, such as environmental degradation; rapid population increase with subsequent exponential expansion of urban centres and other related factors; all these leading to increased population vulnerabilities.

The trends of disasters are worrying in their nature, frequency and severity. It is upon this premise that plans such as Hyogo Framework of Action and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction were developed as a way of having collective and coordinated efforts to deal with the aforementioned challenges. Thus, development partners, governments and practitioners have rightly highlighted the need to prioritize mainstreaming DRR/CCA in their development and humanitarian interventions. IDEAL Public Health and Development Consultancy (IPHDC), in recognition of the capacity need for DRR and CCA in the development and humanitarian sector, has planned a five-day training aimed at program planners, decision-makers and implementers.

Who should attend this training?

Programme staff of humanitarian and development agencies including project managers, officers and assistants.

What are the key aspects of the training?

  • Overview of DRR & CCA in relation to humanitarian and development actions.
  • Definitions of concepts and key terminologies.
  • Climate change science.
  • Understanding disasters.
  • Institutional frameworks of DRR & CCA.
  • Mainstreaming DRR & CCA in key development and humanitarian sectors.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation for DRR & CCA.

What is the main training objective?

To equip learners with skills and improve their understanding of Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation (DRR & CCA) concepts with an aim to improve the quality of DRR & CCA programming so that development actions can ultimately lead to increased communities resilience to common hazards such as droughts, floods etc.

What learning approach and language will be used in the training?

The entire training will be facilitated in English.

An appropriate combination of various adult-learning facilitation paradigms will be used including exploratory learning, group discussions, plenary brainstorming, frontal lectures, case studies and video documentaries among others.

A basic understanding of PMD Pro principles is strongly advised, as well as experience managing projects and using basic management tools like project plans, logframes, and budgets.

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Proposal and Report Writing

$

Country: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Organization: RedR UK
Registration deadline: 07 Dec 2018
Starting date: 10 Dec 2018
Ending date: 12 Dec 2018

Proposal and report writing serve important functions in humanitarian agencies and are common and necessary tasks for staff in various levels and roles throughout the organisation. Nevertheless, writing proposals and reports can be challenging. The ability of NGOs to deliver aid is dependent on their access to funds, and the quality of project proposals determines whether or not funds are ultimately received. Reports must analyze the information that is presented, draw consistent conclusions, and make sensible and practical recommendations, otherwise they risk falling short of their objective.

It is essential for the operation of humanitarian programmes that organisations have the capacity to design, write and deliver high quality project proposals and reports. This course will focus on aspects that make proposals effective and successful and will introduce participants to best practices in proposal writing and help them to develop the knowledge and skills needed to improve their efficacy in writing, presenting and defending proposals. It will also cover report writing and will equip you with skills and techniques to write clear and engaging reports that encourage the reader to take action on your recommendations.

What does the course cover?

  • Elements of proposals and reports: structure and components

  • Tools for planning and preparation

  • Formal and informal reporting

  • Identifying proposal purpose and understanding donor requirements

  • Writing skills, including language, layout, format, structure, flow and finishing

  • Common mistakes and best practices

By the end of the course you will:

  • List the components of a proposal and organise them in a logical flow

  • Explain what makes proposals effective

  • Use tools, such as the log frame, to design proposals with clear logic

  • Adapt proposals to fit donor requirements, preferences and guidelines

  • Write clear proposals using appropriate language, layout, format and structure
    Produce effective reports

  • Identify Common problems in reporting, learning concepts and principles on writing reports
Tailor a report to a target audience

Providing access to safe water and sanitation is a fundamental human right and is essential to any humanitarian response. Water and sanitation programming, alongside hygiene promotion, is key to reducing deaths from water-related diseases in emergency contexts. This highly participatory course, with group exercises and theory based sessions, provides an overview of WASH in emergencies, identifying key issues and training participants on key technical skills.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Describe the role of WASH within the wider emergency response context

  • List the minimum global and institutional standards for WASH

  • Identify and evaluate potential emergency water supply sources

  • Conduct tests to determine the quality of water and be able to describe or demonstrate both bulk and household level water treatment techniques

  • Identify appropriate short and medium term options for sanitation and excreta disposal in a range of environments, including those with high water tables, or flooded areas

  • Explain the key considerations to be taken when designing a cholera outbreak response and the principles of disease surveillance and prevention

  • Explain the importance of hygiene promotion to WASH programming and demonstrate community engagement techniques

  • Recognise the key design features and specifications for boreholes and evaluate the performance of drilling contractors
