The incidents of sexual harassment and assault are increasing. Women face risks that are uniquely based on gender, and these risks multiply in a crisis environment. This course addresses this issue by seeking to transfer life-saving skills to women to equip them with the capability for self-protection, develop strength and confidence in a dangerous environment, and deal with the threat of sexual harassment and violence.

Why Women should get security training?

  • Research reveals that crisis and disasters reinforce, perpetuate and increase gender inequality, making bad situations worse for women.
  • Fear has too long and too often been used to shape women’s lives and it is time to say “no more!”
  • Violence against women is cited by the World Health Organisation as a worldwide pandemic.
  • Support is not readily available, especially in crisis countries. Women must be self-reliant.
  • Risk assessments, SOPs, crisis prevention/response/recovery are seldom gender- sensitive. Women should be equipped with specific tools and techniques that reduce their vulnerabilities.
  • Security begins with defining and protecting personal space, which includes the right to own ground, set boundaries, and remove anyone who invades that space.
  • Studies have proven that self-confidence, expressed in verbal and physical resistance skills, reduce the likelihood of assault. The ability to resist at the first sign of unwanted behavior reduces the odds of further harassment and unwanted sexual contact.
  • Women who can take care of themselves, as well as the teams under their leadership, are role models for developing resilience for all women everywhere.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the training, the participant will be able to:

  1. ascertain the security risks specific to themselves as women.

  2. identify measures that reduce their vulnerability.

  3. heighten prevention capability by recognizing threats, warning signs of danger, and potential security incidents.

  4. learn how to own one's ground, draw clear and strong boundaries, and protect personal space.

  5. advocate for more gender-sensitive security protocols.

  6. discover own power, voice, heightened confidence, and abilities for self-protection.

  7. learn practical self-defense techniques and apply them in simulations, with the end-view of being prepared in an actual situation.

Training Venue: Classy Hotel, Ainkawa, Erbil, KRI

  • Communication,
  • Effets des armes,
  • Sécurité des locaux,
  • Rapport d’incident,
  • Mines, EEI, munitions non explosées
  • Violences sexuelles,
  • POS / Plans de contingence,
  • Premiers Secours (certificat EFR).

A major challenge for humanitarian workers is the question of what to do in life-threatening situations relating to a range of medical emergencies. Immediate and effective emergency treatment is a life-saving measure, especially in remote areas and high-risk environments where professional medical care is delayed or not available. Field workers must be able to recognize injuries, trauma, and various medical situations in the field. From that initial assessment, they must be able to respond based on specific protocols and the use of medical products. And yet life-saving first aid is not just for field personnel, but for every individual who wants to be prepared in the worst of times, wherever that may be.

This course aims to train individuals on the capability to carry out life-saving emergency first aid when they are the first on scene, and when there is no immediate help available. They will learn the procedures that preserve life, prevent deterioration, and promote recovery, until they can hand over the injured person to emergency medical professionals.

This training is taught by NUCO instructors who are also TQUK-certified (Training Qualifications UK). They are experienced field medics, serving as volunteers for civilian care in Mosul, Kirkuk, and other frontline areas during military operations. Not only is their certification governed by international regulatory bodies, they are also certified in Tactical Combat Casualty Care from the US, German, and Philippine armies.

Topics include:

  • The role of the first aider in pre-hospital first aid and trauma care
  • Point-of-injury care
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) in the field
  • Assessment method for the unresponsive casualty
  • Catastrophic Bleeding
  • Sucking chest wound, tension pneumothorax, penetrating wounds to the chest
  • CPR
  • Respiratory problems
  • Bandaging (various types)
  • Managing shock
  • Explosion, burns, and trauma injuries
  • Minor head injuries
  • Bone injuries
  • Carrying techniques

Upon completing the course, participants will be awarded the following certificates:

  1. Basic Life Support (BLS) comes from NUCO Training Centre, UK (valid for 3 years).
  2. Remote Area First Aid (RAFA) comes from Strategic Edge International, Switzerland (no expiration).

Starting date: 14 Sep 2018
Ending date: 19 Oct 2018

Course Description

The cultivation, preparation, distribution, and consumption of food are practices that shape how we organize ourselves socially, economically and politically. Control over food is central to the sustainability and self-determination of communities. In this seminar, you will learn about different approaches to building community-based food systems and movements for food justice around the world. Together, we will evaluate various strategies for protecting community food resources and rebuilding local food economies, as well as the factors that threaten these efforts. With special consideration for marginalized communities in the global North and South, students will develop a conceptual toolkit and set of resources to help them assess the limitations and possibilities of their own community’s food system.

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Understand the historical and economic “root causes” of global hunger, peasant displacement and environmental degradation.
  • Understand the key differences between the “dominant paradigm” of food system change and alternative models based in food sovereignty and food justice.
  • Identify concrete examples of political and practical strategies, in the global North and South, for promoting community-based food systems; and evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies.
  • Support local and global movements for community-based food systems by engaging in informed activism.
